The NCAA has come down hard on the Southern Methodist University golf program, finding a healthy number of recruiting violations and improper contact with recruits by former coach Josh Gregory.
As a result of the sins of the past, the present and future of the SMU golf program is in trouble. The team is banned from post-season play for the coming season and that means that reigning NCAA individual champion Bryson DeChambeau will not be able to defend his title next spring.
DeChambeau returned for his senior season at SMU after winning the U.S. Amateur championship. He’s only the fifth player in history to win both the NCAA title and the Amateur.
His future at the school is uncertain, he could decide it’s time to turn professional.
The program will also lose scholarships, 1 1/8 a season for the next three years.
Harsh penalties for a golf program.
It will make the top recruits think twice before considering SMU.
