This one was a forgettable week for American women golfers in Thailand.
First, it’s important to know that not one, not two but three players shot 20-under par or better at the Siam Country Club. Best of those was Amy Yang, your 2019 LPGA Thailand champ. She closed with a 65 and shot 22-under. She needed that 65 with Minjee Lee and Carlota Ciganda hot on her heels. Lee’s 66 got her to 21-under, a shot shy of Yang. Ciganda really brought the heat on Sunday, shooting 63 to get to 20-under.
Things were tied with three holes to play when Yang missed a six-foot par putt at the 15th. But she birdied 16 and 18 to pull it out. Lee had a chance to tie it at the 18th but her eagle putt on the par five stopped just short of the hole.
This was Yang’s third victory in the event and her fourth overall LPGA victory.
There was only one American player in the top 10. Nelly Korda, fresh off her victory at the women’s Aussie Open, finished with 70 and a 14-under par total, good for solo seventh.
Michelle Wie made her return after wrist surgery last fall. Wie was six-under and finished in a tie for 23rd.
Lexi Thompson, who had a nice track record of top five finishes in this event, put an end to that. She finished the week two-under par and tied or 48th.
World’s No. 1, Ariya Jutanugarn, left her home-country fans disappointed after she shot 10-under and finished 14th.
