This week, the PGA Tour stays in Hawaii, as the Sony Open starts Thursday at the Waialae Country Club.
This was always seen as the first full-field tournament of the year. Jordan Spieth won the Hyundai Tournament of Champions last week and the Sony will be the first event where a lot of the rookies can show up and get their feet wet.
The event has been at Waialae Country Club since 1965. Defending champion, Jimmy Walker, is looking to become the first player to win the Sony three times in succession. His chances of making history have been increased, due to the fact that Jordan Spieth did not have this stop on his schedule.
When looking at contenders for the 2016 title, it may be considered wise to look at those players who participated in the recent Hyundai Tournament of Champions. It’s a fact that well over half of the previous 17 winners of the Sony Open, had played in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions the same year.
A glance down the list of previous winners at Waialae, show the Sony Open to be an event where players outside of the big names can do very well.
Other previous winners in the field include Vijay Singh, Russell Henley, Jerry Kelly, Ryan Palmer and KJ Choi.
Other proven players in the field include Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar, Brandt Snedeker and Graeme McDowell.
The 2016 Sony should be a great event to watch as it airs in prime time on the mainland U.S. on the Golf Channel starting Thursday evening.
