One man stood out on moving day at the Northern Trust, here’s what Jordan Spieth did on Saturday:
Jordan Spieth imposed his will on the field at the Northern Trust with a third-round 64. He’s 12-under par and has built a three-shot lead going into Sunday’s finale in the first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Spieth’s putter was on full display. He battled some mistakes on the front nine yet still managed to shot 33 at Glen Oaks going out. He started his back nine with a birdie at 10 then pulled away with three straight starting at the 14th where he sank an 11-footer. He dropped in another from 22-feet a t15 then stuffed his second at the par four 16th within four feet. He opened up a three-shot lead.
Dustin Johnson will play with Spieth in the final twosome on Sunday. D.J. had a quiet day with four birdies and a bogey and will see if he can chase down Spieth over the final 18.
Three are some pretty strong players who will start the day five shots back.
John Rahm’s 67 got him to seven-under. Patrick Reed’s 66 got him in that group along with Paul Casey (66) and Matt Kuchar (68).
Rickie Fowler, who started the day a shot back of overnight leader Johnson, had a miserable third round. He shot 74 and fell all the way back to two-under and tied for 22nd.
Rory McIlroy, after stumbling around Glen Oaks with a 73 on Thursday, has followed it up with rounds of 68 and 69.
Phil Mickelson, trying to show President’s Cup Captain Steve Stricker that he’s getting closer, shot 71 and is one-over through 54 holes. Nothing to write home about.
