For the first time in 27 years the Open Championship will finish on a Monday.
Torrential storms on Friday followed by high wind conditions on Saturday morning have wreaked havoc on this 144th playing of golf’s oldest major championship.
A total of 39 groups were left on the course when it became too dark to play late Friday. The players went out at 7 a.m. Saturday morning but winds were so strong they moved golf balls on various greens, especially the 11th.
Dustin Johnson lost his lead at the 14th hole when it took him four shots to get his ball into the hole on the par five. He was just short of the green in two and the bogey dropped him back to nine-under and in a tie with Danny Willett, who finished in the early wave on Friday.
Play was scheduled to resume at 5 p.m. St. Andrews time and the remaining groups would finish. The third round was moved to Sunday with the final 18 on Monday.
The last time there was a Monday finish, Seve Ballesteros won the Claret Jug at Royal Litham.
