The PGA Tour Qualifying School, aka, the Web.com finals, turned into a shining moment Sunday for Peter Uihlein.
Uihlein has labored on the European Tour for the past six years and made his move to the Web.com finals thanks to a fifth place finish in Puerto Rico and a top 25 in Houston.
The 28-year-old former Oklahoma State star had a career day at the Ohio State’s Scarlet course to win the Nationwide Children’s Hospital title and in the process, guaranteed himself a spot on the PGA Tour for the 2017-2018 season.
“It’s been a lot of air miles, a lot of planes but I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” said Uihlein of his European experience. Uihlein put seven birdies on his scorecard, shot 65 and won by a shot over Ryan Armour. Uihlein posted 14-under and finished ahead of Armour. Armour birdied the 15th hole to tie Uihlein for the lead and stayed there until he hooked his drive at the 18th. It came back in the fairway but he made well over 200 yards into the green. His approach ended up on the short side and he failed to get up and down.
Armour’s bogey handed the title and a tour card to Uihlein.
Uihlein is the son of Achusnet Company (Titleist) Chairman Wally Uihlein.
