On a sloggy, rainy Sunday morning at Baltusrol, Jimmy Walker fought off a bad front nine with four birdies coming home and he’ll have a shot at winning his first major championship — the PGA.
Walker is the 54-hole leader, he has now led all three rounds and is in unknown territory. It will not be easy for him to go wire-to-wire in this one.
Jason Day, the defending champion, finished a group in front of him and posted 67 to get to 10-under. Then Walker matched him with a birdie of his own on the 540-yard par five to shoot 68 and sit at the top at 11-under.
Right behind those two are Open champion Henrik Stenson and talented Brooks Koepka. Stenson shot a third-straight 67 and will start the final 18 just two shots back. Koepka, getting over a severe injury to his right ankle, shot 66 to join Stenson.
You will not see Day and Walker paired in the final group, however. The PGA of America, in attempt to get the final round done by Sunday evening, sent the same groups back out. It was also decided to play lift-clean-and-place due to the overly wet conditions as many in the morning round were struggling with mud on the golf balls.
“I’m glad we got the third round in,” said Day, who along with the rest at the top, didn’t get to tee off on Saturday. “I’m playing well. I’m looking forward to the fourth round.”
