The PGA Tour has played at Doral for 55 years.
Next year it will not.
PGA Tour Commissar Tim Finchem made it official Wednesday afternoon at Muirfield Village and made these key points regarding the decision:
“It was fundamentally a sponsorship decision.”
“It is a difficult situation.”
“He (Trump) is clearly disappointed.”
“Couldn’t secure a sponsor (for Doral).”
“We (PGA Tour) are a conservative organization.”
“The politics might have contributed some.”
“It was not a political decision.”
Those were the main talking points from Finchem, who revealed that the new sponsor is a Mexican conglomerate: Grupo Salinas. It is a huge group of companies, most have technology and communications as their core businesses.
Trump took it with a grain of salt, he knew on Tuesday that the decision had been made.
“They’re moving to Mexico City,” said Trump, “which, by the way, I hope they have kidnapping insurance.”
Trump was right about one thing, it costs a lot of money to host a tour event. “It costs me a lot of money,” he conceded. “So if they want to move it, that’s up to them.”
Sort of a “don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out” approach by The Donald.
