Everyone can probably agree that Phil Mickelson will be a Ryder Cup team captain sooner than later.
Exactly when remains to be seen.
After last week’s resounding American victory, the one thought today is this: How much gas is left in Phil’s tank as a player?
It was utterly amazing on Sunday when he came up with 10 birdies. It was the type of play he mustered on the final day at the Open Championship, only to see Henrik Stenson play even better.
And you would think 10 birdies is enough to win any singles match in Ryder Cup competition. Only problem is that Sergio Garcia came up with nine to end the match all even.
In two years, Paris will host the 2018 Ryder Cup and the question is: will Mickelson be there as a player?
Mickelson will be the first to tell you ‘yes’ but two seasons is a long time.
Right now, you would have to say ‘maybe.’
It will be interesting. This go-round, it was important that the U.S. win, important for Mickelson as he’s been a captain-killer. He threw Tom Watson under the bus two years ago and hammered Hal Sutton before last week’s opening ceremony, then later apologized heartily.
That’s the way Mickelson is — open mouth, insert size 12 foot.
Perhaps one day he can get past it because to be a Ryder Cup captain, you have to be careful what you say about other Ryder Cup captains.
And that goes for Mickelson in a big way.
