Phil Mickelson gave the folks who showed up early in Memphis something to get excited about on Thursday.
Mickelson started out hot as a proverbial Memphis June afternoon. He was four-under par thru his first seven holes and looking every bit like a guy who might shoot 62.
It simply wasn’t to be. Mickelson used up all his gas early and had to be pushed home over the last 11 holes. He played them in two-over-par with bogeys at the fourth and eighth holes, no birdies, and settled for a 68 that left him tied for 18th.
He got the start he was looking for, but as it happens more often these days, he couldn’t sustain his early momentum. He found himself four in back of early leaders Brooks Koepka and Greg Owen.
