Bring on the Bermuda shorts!
The PGA Tour made it official this week — players can wear shorts in practice rounds AND on Pro-Am day.
Comfort and common sense have had their way with The Sheriff of Nottingham (aka tour commissioner Jay Monahan) and his band of Ponte Vedra henchmen.
Seems the players pushed for it through their player board members and Voila! Time for shorts.
Didn’t sound like too big a deal until someone snapped a picture of Phil Mickelson and his shorts.
Lefty unveiled some stunning calf muscles and the tour Twitter-Sphere erupted.
One great tweet came from Phil’s sister, Tina:
“Hey bro, with calves like that you should be able to jump higher!”
Phil’s shirt sponsor, Mizzen + Main shot this out:
“Our office is getting a photo of your calves on our motivation wall asap.”
Before long, there were more than 1,450 tweets about Phil’s lower legs.
The one thing the shorts do confirm is that Lefty doesn’t skip “leg day” at the gym.
Michelle Wie’s Back, Tied For 19th In Thailand:
Michelle Wie has made her return to the LPGA Tour this week and looks totally recovered from her recent wrist surgery.
Wie opened with rounds of 68-72 and is tied for 19th after 36 holes. She’s one of seven players at four-under par, including world’s No. 1 Ariya Jutanugarn.
They are seven shots back of halfway leader Jenny Shin. She has rounds of 65-68 in the books at the Siam Country Club.
American Lizette Salas goes into the weekend just one back of Shin (66-68). Nelly Korda, last week’s winner at the Women’s Aussie Open, goes into moving day just four back at six-under par.
Lexi Thompson got off to a less-than-spectacular start with a 74 on Thursday, followed by a one-under par 71 on Friday. At one-over, she’s tied for 48th.
There are only 70 players in the field, with no 36-hole cut.
