Phil Mickelson has become quite the social media darling.
He’s got a regular series “Phireside (as in Fireside) With Phil.”
Lefty’s gone off on a number of tangents with that, has some fun with it.
Recently Phil brought in Santa Claus for a chat.
Santa informed Lefty that he’s been on Santa’s “Naughty List” a little too often.
Well, Phil had a gift request for Santa.
Seems Lefty wants to play on USA’s “winning 2020 Ryder Cup team.”
Lefty’s making two pretty big assumptions there — first that the U.S. will actually win in 2020 and that he can possibly be on the team.
If Lefty wants to make that team, he’s going to have to resurrect his game in a big way. Lefty turns 50 on June 16 of this coming new year. That typically falls during U.S. Open week, the one major he’s never won.
So that’s a stretch — Mickelson on the Ryder Cup team. He’ll have to play his way on, his day’s as a possible captain’s pick have come and gone.

Who says Phil’s days as a pick are gone?
That would be Patrick Reed…and even he may be picked again.
Phil just needs to get his game tighter this year and he could very well be in, especially with Reed atop the naughty list.
Phil’s issues are not age or distance.
To make it all Lefty needs to do is putt a little better and drive a bit more reliable…ok maybe more than a bit.
1 well timed win would be enough for Lefty, but even a run of good finishes may get it done.
Again, on US soil the Americans have more options because they control the set up.
It’s in Europe Lefty should never ever play team events because they still have rough over there. But the old man is not the only one who should maybe stay home; it’s basically all the American stars including the Tiger trying to become the goat.

Phil can’t find a fairway with GPS, much less his driver!
