We’re going back in the golf time machine for a real treat today — tips from the great Bobby Jones.
If you haven’t seen one of Bobby’s instructional short films, then you’re in for a treat. This one gives us a look at the production itself and there to ask questions of Bobby is none other than one of the biggest Hollywood stars of that era — Jimmy Cagney.
These films made by Jones were state-of-the-art for that era — including incredible slow-motion sequences of Jones’ elegant swing.
What should strike you immediately is how free-flowing Bobby’s action was. No tension in his golf swing.
This episode finds Bobby talking about practice and how he goes about his practice sessions — they all have a purpose and that’s something we should all keep in mind.
There’s also humor in a lot of Bobby’s instructional films. This one features a lady who shows up with her clubs, expecting to play with Jones.
Cagney and the rest give her the bad news and basically try to curb her propensity to speak when Bobby is speaking.
It’s fun to watch and there’s a lot to be learned from the timeless swing action that was Jones and his alone.
Pay attention to his lower body and how he works it in the swing. He starts the downswing with his lower body and that’s still a formula for success in the modern game.
So sit back and enjoy this classic!
