Ian Poulter was mistakenly told at last week’s match play that he earned a spot in The Masters.
He can do something about that misinformation on Sunday at the Houston Open.
Poulter fired a seven-under par 65 on Saturday and his 14-under par total was good enough to earn him the 54-hole co-lead with young Beau Hossler.
Poulter needs a victory to earn the last available spot in The Masters, which begins on Thursday in Augusta, Ga.
First he’ll have to contend with Hossler, who birdied his final hole of the day to shoot 69 and in the process, earned a spot next to Poulter in the final group.
Poulter and Hossler will start the final 18 two clear of Kevin Tway, Greg Chalmers, Paul Dunne and Emiliano Grillo.
An expected by Rickie Fowler was undone by a front-nine double-bogey and a back-nine triple. Fowler’s 73 dropped him to nine-under, five back.
Jordan Spieth shot 71 to get to 10-under but will look back at the four three-putt greens he had over the first eight holes and wonder if his putting is ready for Augusta.
All Justin Rose could muster was an even par 72 that left him at seven-under par.
