The island of Puerto Rico is still trying to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria.
The PGA Tour holds its opposite-field event there every March for players not eligible for the WGC event.
The 2018 event won’t happen, in its place the tour is organizing a major Pro-Am style fundraiser, seeking to raise at least $500,000 for the ongoing rebuilding and relief efforts.
The site will be the tour-owned TPC Dorado Beach. By moving to one of its properties, the tour hopes to increase the funds raised by the event that will feature PGA Tour players along with celebrities from the world of sports and entertainment.
PGA Tour Boss Jay Monahan added this with the announcement:
“The Puerto Rico Open has been part of the PGA Tour for the last 10 years and our commitment to golf on the Island has never been stronger. Our hope is that this special event in 2018 will benefit Puerto Rico’s recovery efforts to the fullest extent, while reminding the world that Puerto Rico is a premier golf and travel destination.”
The tournament will return to the PGA Tour schedule as an official, opposite-field event in 2019 and 2020.
