The last time we saw some action at the Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Sei Young Kim edged Charley Hull for a big fat $1.5 million payday at the LPGA season finale.
Kim shot 18 under at the CME Tour Championship to beat Hull by a shot.
There’s another event there at the end of this week — the QBE Shootout which used to be The Shark Shootout.
The previously all-male competition went co-ed a while back. Lexi Thompson, who plays pretty well at Tiburon, got the invite. She teamed with Tony Finau last year and they finished down the line in the final standings. This week Lexi won’t see as much horsepower on her team with Sean O’Hair in for Finau, who’s in Australia playing for the U.S. at the Presidents Cup matches.
There will be a total of 12 teams playing 54-holes, starting Friday, with a different format each day.
First day is a scramble. Look for really, really low scores. The second round is a modified alternate shot where both players hit their tee shots, then they choose the best one and play alternate shot from that point. Final round is a traditional four-ball, also called best-ball format.
Perhaps the best team on paper is Matt Wolff and Viktor Hovland — two of last season’s hottest rookies.
Two-time fall winner Brendon Todd will play with Billy Horschel — and they’re every bit as good at the Wolff-Hovland pair.
Overall, it’s a low scoring affair.
Just another offshoot from the old silly-season golf.
