John Rahm took a step back Friday in Memphis while Matthew Fitzpatrick stepped up.
Rahm, who opened with a 62 at the WGC St. Jude, cooled off considerably at the TPC Southwind with a second round 71 that left him along with three others looking up at young Fitzpatrick.
Fitz put together a six-under par 64 and moved into the solo 36-hole lead at nine-under par.
Rahm posted 71 and fell into a tie with Patrick Cantlay, Billy Horschel and Cam Smith. Smith was in solo second at eight-under until his second shot into the 18th from the deep rough right of the fairway found the water left of the green. He made bogey and fell back into the seven-under group after shooting 68.
Brooks Koepka got himself in touch with the leader. The world’s No. 1 shot 67 to get to five-under and goes into the weekend just four back.
