John Rahm is on a roll.
And Billy Hurley III has played well enough at Congressional Friday to make the U.S. Navy proud.
Those two players have set a torrid, 36-hole pace at the Quicken Loans National. They are 11-under par and three in front of an aging veteran.
Vijay Singh is 53-years-old and within sniffing distance of the lead going into the weekend after rounds of 68-66 got him to eight-under par.
Rahm, playing in his first professional event, had the lead by himself going to the final hole of the day, the difficult 18th. He second shot found the front fringe, 60 feet away and from there it took him three to get down and the ensuing bogey dropped him back into a tie with Hurley.
Rahm’s day started fast on the front nine. He hit is approach four-inches from the cup on the third hole, five-inches on the fourth, six-feet at six and five-feet at nine. He made all four putts to get to 11-under par.
Rahm’s first bogey of the tournament came at the par three 11th when he missed the green right and failed to get up-and-down from the bunker after short-siding himself.
Hurley is trying to regain his status and a good showing this week can go a long way for the graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in nearby Annapolis.
Two former U.S. Open champions are four shots back. Ernie Els and Webb Simpson are in at seven-under along with Billy Haas and rookie Harold Varner III from East Carolina University.
Rickie Fowler finds himself at six-under after a pair of 68s.
The cut came at even par and defending champion Troy Merritt didn’t make it, finishing one-over par for his first two rounds.
