Players waited in the locker room at the TPC San Antonio Thursday as it rained, and rained then rained some more.
It rained all morning, at least most of it, delaying play at the Valero Texas Open for three and a half hours.
The field finally got out and it was Charley Hoffman, the king of the early rounds, who opened with a six-under par 66.
Naturally, Hoffman had an early tee time. More than half the field was unable to finish and will be back out early Friday morning to finished round one.
Stuart Appleby, who hasn’t seen a leader board in quite a while, was a shot behind Hoffman with a 67 along with Peter Malnati, who got his first victory earlier this season.
Rookie Bryson DeChambeau, fresh off his top four finish at Hilton Head, had a rough day and ended up with a two-over par 75.
Ditto for defending champion Jimmy Walker. Walker staggered out of the blocks with a three-over par 75 and will have to go low to make the 36-hole cut.
Phil Mickelson had a late tee time and did not finish before dark.
