After what transpired at the 80th playing of The Masters last week at Augusta National, this week’s RBC Heritage can be nothing but anti-climatic.
How on earth do you follow up an act like that? What transpired last Sunday may not be equaled for a while, certainly not this week at the Harbour Town Golf Links.
The setting is great — Hilton Head Island, S.C. This is the course where Jack Nicklaus got his feet wet in the design business, mentored by Pete Dye. It’s a remarkable golf course, one that has stood the test of time, it doesn’t favor the bombers, you better be able to golf your ball around this tree-lined beauty.
Granted, the world’s No. 1 — Jason Day — is here but there’s been a ton of attention given Bryson DeChambeau, who played remarkably well at the Masters and this week he plays for pay. He’s a professional.
Chambeau has the new factor going for him. He’s trying to play his way on to the tour and after this week, he’ll have only six more events to try and stack up enough money to get temporary status.
Day on the other hand needs to rebound from a terribly mediocre showing in the season’s first major.
Another guy who needs to rebound is Zach Johnson. Johnson played so bad last Friday that he missed the 36-hole cut. Not good for the fellow who is supposed to be The Champion Golfer Of The Year.
The one given this week is that there will be a new champion. Jim Furyk is not here to defend. He’s still recovering from wrist surgery.
