Daniel Berger appears extremely serious about making the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
Serious enough to light it up big-time Saturday at TPC River Highlands.
Berger put up five final nine birdies on his way to an eight-under par 62 that gave him a three-shot lead at 15-under par after 54-holes at The Travelers.
He needed it as low scores were there for the taking on a day that saw the field tee off early to try and get in before predicted afternoon thunderstorms. With overcast skies, little to no wind and a light rain on the back, birdies were there for the taking.
Russell Knox, Tyrone Van Aswegen and Russell Henley will start the final round three back. Knox fashioned a 64, Henley and Van Aswegen had 65s.
Patrick Rodgers was the only other player double-digits under par. He shot 66 to post 10-under.
But it was Berger who came to life over the final nine holes, keeping up his pursuit of a Ryder Cup spot.
“It was just a great day. Made a bunch of putts and that’s what it takes to shoot a low number out here,” said Berger, who is looking for his second win this season. “I’m striking it well and driving it well.”
He was aware that some good players will be chasing him on Sunday, including Knox, who like Berger, wants to make the Ryder Cup on the European side. “It’s better than being a shot behind,” Berger said of his lead. “I have to buckle down and hit some good shots coming down the stretch tomorrow.”
Brooks Koepka continued his recovery from problems with his right ankle. He shot 64 and got to nine-under. “The better I play, the better it feels,” Koepka said with a grin.
