In case you missed it, they did have a tournament somewhere in the whirlwind of the Tiger Woods Comeback Invitational, aka the Hero World Challenge.
Hideki Matsuyama continued his run as the hottest player in golf on Sunday down in the Bahamas when he gave up five shots of his overnight lead but still managed to win, his fourth victory in his last five events.
The young Japanese star closed with a one-over par 73 on a breezy day at the Albany Resort to finish 18-under par, two better than the reigning Open champion — Henrik Stenson.
It was the first day that Matsuyama actually struggled. After five holes, he was eight in front of Stenson, his only pursuer. It was a double-bogey at the 10th that sent Matsuyama into the struggle mode but Stenson couldn’t find enough birdies on the back nine to mount a threat down the stretch. A three-putt par by Stenson at 15 gave Matsuyama the breathing room he needed.
“I’ve played well until today. I struggled a bit,” Matsuyama said after his round. Still he did enough to prevail over the elite field. Stenson finished with a 68 to go 16-under.
Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler tied for third at 13-under.
Host Tiger Woods had his worst day of the week, closing with a four-over par 76 that dropped him to four-under and 15th place in the 17-man field.
