Defending champion Rory McIlroy will not play at the WGC Bridgestone this week and odds are that you may not see him at the PGA Championship either.
It was this time last year that McIlroy took over the golf world with his victory at the Open Championship followed by wins at the Bridgestone and then the PGA — an incredible run of victories.
That makes it sting even more. Fact is, he hasn’t hit any balls, he’s still in rehab mode from the left ankle he turned viciously while playing soccer with his pals a few weeks back.
If he misses the next two weeks to end the major championship season, you would have to ask if there’s any reason whatsoever to try and play in the PGA Tour’s year-end playoffs. After all, this is the No. 1 player in the world and his future is certainly more important than the present.
No doubt Rory’s been getting all sorts of advice. He’s spoken to Tiger Woods, who is the PGA Tour’s resident expert on injuries.
No doubt Woods advised him it’s probably better to come back a month late than a day too soon.
