The last time we saw Rory McIlroy he was leaving the PGA Championship totally unsure about the remainder of his season.
His rib injury from earlier in the season was acting up, forcing him into limited practice time.
He said he’d consider shutting things down for the year.
That won’t happen.
McIlroy, the defending FedEx Cup champion, will be in the field for this week’s first stop on the playoff path — the Northern Trust. It will be contested at the Glen Oaks Club on Long Island, not far from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. McIlroy will make an appearance Tuesday at Yankee Stadium as part of the tournament’s promotion.
McIlroy is ranked 44th in the standings and will have to play well if he expects to be at the Tour Championship.
The top 125 are in the field this week. The top 100 then advance to the Dell at the TPC Boston where McIlroy won last year. After that, the top 70 then head for the BMW with the final 30 decided that week.
