It has been a lost season for Rory McIlroy as far as the major championships go.
His PGA Championship started with him as the pre-tournament favorite and ended with a tie for 22nd.
McIlroy shot 72-72-73-68, finished one-over par and now has some huge decisions looming over him.
The four-time major champion has admitted that he hasn’t fully recovered from his early-season rib injury. Bad news is that it prevents him from practicing the way he needs to.
“Right now I can feel my left rhomboid (muscle) going into spasm,” McIlroy said after he finished play on Sunday. “It’s sort of he way it has been the last few weeks. I have upped my practice coming into these two events (WGC and PGA) because I wanted to feel like I was in a good place with my game. But yeah, now it’s a tough one because I go out there and play and shoot decent scores but when I come off the course, I feel my left rhomboid going into spasm. Inside my left arm goes numb,” McIlroy revealed.
His immediate future is in total doubt. Does he shut it down or try to play through it?
“Look, I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he went on. “You might not see me until next year. You might see me in a couple of weeks time. It really depends.”
McIlroy admitted he hasn’t allowed his injury time to fully heal. “I wanted to play the season,” he said.
Now he doesn’t know.
“So I don’t know what to do. I have got this next week off to assess what I need to go forward.”
