Defending champion and odds-on favorite at next week’s British Open, Rory McIlory, may not be able to play in the championship.
McIlroy suffered a serious ankle injury on Saturday while playing soccer with some friends.
The 2014 winner at Royal Liverpool and a 4-1 favorite with the oddsmakers, suffered what was described as a “ruptured ligament” on the front of his left ankle, the one that bears a lot of weight on the follow-through of a golf swing.
McIlroy put up the news on Instagram and has begun treatment for the injury. The problem with his type of injury is that it requires a long period of rest, as much as a week to 10-days.
“Rehab already started, working hard to get back as soon as I can,” McIlroy said on his Instagram account.
Unfortunately for McIlroy it may be later than sooner before he can return.
He was scheduled to play in this week’s Scottish Open, that’s out and St. Andrews isn’t looking good for the young man from Northern Ireland.
