Rory McIlroy is wondering out loud about Jordan Spieth’s expectations for the upcoming 2016 season.
After winning two majors and coming so very close in the other two, Spieth bagged Player of the Year honors, banked more than $20 million and put an incredible season in the record books.
“It will feel completely different for Jordan,” McIlroy told the Telegraph, a popular London newspaper. “There’s so much expectation, so much attention and focus. And I think it is more self-inflicted pressure really as your expectations are so high.”
McIlroy was drawing on his own experience. After winning the final two majors of the 2014 season, he was not able to win the Masters in 2015 even though he came in as the favorite. “I started well. I never felt I really got into my stride with the injury and stuff.”
Hopefully Spieth won’t have “injury” or “stuff” to deal with. Spieth has developed into the kind of competitor who welcomes the pressure.
Spieth’s 2016 debut is about 10 days away when the Tournament of Champions begins in Hawaii.
In the meantime, Spieth is busy as work. He posted a video of himself working on his swing in his deluxe home simulator.
The swing looks pretty good.
