Things have been pretty quiet in the Rory McIlroy camp the past month and he rattled some cages earlier when he hinted that he might give you his membership on the European Tour.
Seems Keith Pelley from the European Tour flew to Northern Ireland to have a couple of pints with Rory recently and most likely attempted to talk some sense into the lad.
Fact is, Rory might one day want to captain a Ryder Cup team for Europe when he’s older and much shorter off the tee than he is today. If he gives up his status, that cannot happen anytime in the future.
Also keep in mind that the European Tour pays appearance fees.
Maybe their conversation went something like this:
Pelley: “Rory, how about we drop about 400,000 pounds into yer mum and dad’s bank account? You only need to add two European Tour events to your schedule.”
Rory: “Done and done!”
And that would conclude such negotiation post-haste.
So don’t look for Rory to ditch his membership.
In the meantime, Rory says he’ll show up for the PGA Tour’s elite treat — the Tournament Of Champions the first week of the New Year at Kapalua. It’s a nice vacation and a guaranteed pay day.
Mai-Tais for everyone.
