Russell Henley was uninspired and unimpressive during Saturday’s third round at the Wyndham Championship until he reached the 15th hole.
Henley, who opened with rounds of 62-64, was even par for his round on a day when those closest to him weren’t exactly tearing it up either. Henley easily reached the 550-yard par five in two then rolled in a 33-footer for eagle to get himself to 16-under and was four clear of Tyler McCumber, who shot 66 and was finished for the day at 12-under.
But Henley three-putted his final hole and a lackluster 69. Still, he’s 15-under par through 54-holes and will take a three-shot lead over McCumber into Sunday’s final round.
With storms threatening the Greensboro area Sunday afternoon, tee times were moved up to try and get things done before the bad weather arrives.
Things are really bunched up behind McCumber. There are a half-dozen players at 11-under par — Brandon Grace (64), Roger Sloan (64), Kevin Kisner (66), Kevin Na (67), Scott Piercy (69) and Rory Sabbatini (69).
Another six players were tied at 10-under, including Justin Rose, Adam Scott and Webb Simpson. Simpson lost his chance to get closer to Henley when he took triple-bogey seven at the par four 14th.
