Scott Piercy was playing good golf at the end of last season, so much that he was a whisper-type of longshot for the Ryder Cup team.
That’s as far as it went but Piercy picked up Thursday where he left off last season when he won $2.9 million and finished in the top 40 on the money list.
Despite a pair of bogeys on the front nine at Silverado, Piercy still managed to shoot a course-record 10-under par 62. He credited the day to improved putting and the switch to a new putter. “At the end of last season I was ranked 150th in putting. I switched putters, something with a little more toe hang and worked a lot with my coach. Worked with the ball between two tees to get it back better and worked a lot on it the last month. When the putts go in it’s nice,” Piercy said.
Another player who should have been in the Ryder Cup — Paul Casey — continued his solid performance in the playoffs with a 64. Casey was left off the European Ryder Cup team, a decision that will probably have the European Tour rethinking how it goes about all things Ryder Cup.
Second-year pro Patton Kizzire also put a 64 on the board to start his season.
Jon Rahm, who played his way onto the tour last season by earning over $1 million in just seven events, continued to impress with a 66.
