Just call him Ebenezer Kuchar.
The truth is now out, thanks to some great investigative work by Champions Tour player Tom Gillis.
The sad, miserly truth is that after winning nearly $1.3 million at the Mayakoba Classic, Matt Kuchar paid his local caddie a paltry, mind-numbing $5,000.
The only redeeming thing out of this is that Kuchar was truthful when he made the statement:
“It wasn’t $3,000 and it wasn’t 10 percent.”
No Kuch, it wasn’t $3,000, it was a whopping $5,000.
It was Gillis who originally busted Kuchar on Twitter. After taking some abuse, Gillis went right to the source — David Giral Ortiz aka El Tucan — and verified what he thought he already knew.
He launched this Kuchar-slashing Tweet:
“Been in direct contact with El Tucan now for a few days. He did receive a total of 5k. Not 3k after tournament. Still only 0.0023% percent of check. Fortunately there’s no more middle man. Stay tuned hopefully he gets paid properly.”
This move by Kuchar is truly a sad commentary on a modern-day multi-millionaire sports figure.
That win in Mexico boosted Kuchar past the $45 million mark in career earnings. Now add what he’s made in endorsement money over his 18 year on the Tour and you are most likely getting into the $100 million neighborhood.
Kuch lives the high-life on millionaire-infested St. Simons Island where he has a $3 million oceanfront pad, complete with six bedrooms and seven baths. It’s right at 8,000 square feet of ultra-luxury living.
Kuchar is an educated man and surely has to realize that so many Mexicans live below the poverty line and no doubt El Tucan is out there struggling for every peso he can get carrying golf bags at Mayakoba.
Would it have been asking too much for Kuchar to drop a nice “winning bonus” on his guy? Say, about $30,000?
That sort of money would have been life-changing for the guy.
Instead, Kuchar played the tight-wad, the ugly, greedy, wealthy American.
It’s not a good look.
Folks need to think about that next time they’re tempted to do that “K-u-u-u-u-h” nonsense at a tour event.
As for Ebenezer Kuchar?
Shame on you Matt. Shame on you.
