Sergio Garcia decided to be the big fish in a small pond last week and he got what he was looking for.
Garcia, the reigning Masters champion, turned his nose up at the European Tour and the PGA Tour and decided to take on the lesser-ranked lads struggling over there on the Asian Tour.
It’s summer in Singapore and it was hot, steamy and of course, rainy. The entire week was a stop-start sort of struggle but that didn’t stop Garcia from his appointed rounds.
After shooting 66-70, Garcia had to play 27 holes on Sunday at the Sentosa Golf Club. His third-round 66 put him in the driver’s seat going into the final 18 and by the long day’s end, he closed with 68, shot 14-under and won by five over two guys you’ve never heard of — Santoshi Kodairi of Japan and South Africa’s Shaun Norris.
“It may have looked easy, but it wasn’t easy. You still have to hit a lot of good shots out there,” Garcia said. “It’s always great to start with a win, to do it here at this golf course against a good field in Asia on conditions that weren’t easy. Hopefully I can ride on this momentum.”
Wasn’t easy? Sure Sergio.
JACK NICKLAUS CELEBRATES 78TH
Jack Nicklaus had good reason to scarf down a bunch of his Golden Bear ice cream on Sunday — and there was cake to go with it.
Nicklaus and his large clan of children and grandchildren got together in North Palm Beach to celebrate The Golden Bear’s 78th birthday.
He’s still the Gold Standard in the world of golf with 18 major championships.
