Sergio Garcia decided to show up in Amsterdam for the first time and he’s glad he did.
Garcia emerged victorious Sunday at the 100th edition of the KLM Open — his 16th win on the European Tour.
Garcia held off talented newcomer Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark for a one-shot victory. Sergio’s closing 69 got him to 18-under, a shot better than the Danish newcomer, who was playing in only his seventh start on the European Tour.
Hojgaard had a chance to get to 18-under when he hit the par five 18th in two but watched his eagle bid slide past the hole.
Matt Wallace finished solo third at 15-under.
Garcia was greeted by his wife and daughter as he walked off the 18th green.
“It was honestly amazing to have my brother, Angie my wife and little Azalea (his daughter) here, it’s very special,” Garcia said.
“Amazing. We had a great week and great to win again. I played well all week under pressure. It wasn’t easy, there were a couple of tough moments today but I hung on tough, that’s the most important thing.”
The win was Garcia’s first in Europe since the2018 Andalucia Masters in October of 2018.
