This week’s Shell Houston Open is one of the longest-running stops on the PGA Tour, or should we say Shell is one of the longest running sponsors.
These tournaments change sponsors often, but this one’s been a mainstay.
So how does the PGA Tour reward Shell for such loyalty? They moved it to the week before The Masters back in 2007.
Before that, Greater Greensboro Open was the week before for what seems like forever. Yep, the good old GGO, Sam Snead’s annual annuity.
So now it’s Houston and since 2007, no player has won in Houston then gone on to win The Masters the following week.
Which begs the question: Does Jordan Spieth or Phil Mickelson or Henrik Stenson or Adam Scott or Rickie Fowler or Jon Rahm want to win this week?
Well, there’s always a first, isn’t there.
Spieth, Mickelson, Stenson, Scott, Fowler and Rahm are the big-name draws this week which makes it a pretty good week in Texas. Sure, Dustin Johnson withdrew on Monday but who can blame him? That match play stuff was a drag and he ended up playing about 112 holes of golf.
Once again, who wants to win this week? The obvious answer is any player who is not already in The Masters.
The one question that no one’s ever answered is about a potential winner who is not already in at Augusta National.
With hotels and housing in shorter supply than Democrats at a Trump rally, how do they find the guy a place to stay?
