Maybe it was the extra hour Si Woo Kim had to wait to finish his triumphant round Sunday in Greensboro.
Maybe it was the joy of his father overwhelmed by his son’s first PGA Tour win.
As soon as Si Woo holed his final putt of the day, and a birdie at that, his father came running onto the green at the 18th hole at Sedgefield Country Club, open champagne bottle in hand and he proceeded to douse his 21-year-old son with the bubbly.
“Probably me,” when the younger Kim as asked who was happiest of the two.
A one-hour rain delay put the celebration off but it was coming. Kim had built a substantial six-shot lead by the turn and a bout of nerves saw him make a few mistakes and the lead shrunk to three shots at one point. But he rallied and won by five, shooting 67 for a tournament record-tying 21-under par total.
“Today I had a lot of pressure,” Kim acknowledged. “Everything was good on the front nine, a little pressure on the back nine.”
Kim made bogeys at the 10th, 13th and 14th then righted the ship with an easy birdie at the par five 15th then his final putt at 18.
Luke Donald, who has not been heard from in a long time, also shot 67 and finished solo second at 16-under par.
Brandt Snedeker and Hideki Matsuyama tied for second at 15-under.
This was the last regular season event for the PGA Tour, the playoffs begin this week with the Barclays at Bethpage Black in New York.
