Vijay Singh and Bernhard Langer went back and forth on a long Saturday at the PGA Senior and at the end of the day, it was Singh who wrestled the 54-hole lead from Langer.
Langer two-putted for an easy birdie at the par five 18th to get to 14-under then watched Singh holed a three-footer to get to 15-under to set the stage for a Sunday shootout between the two major champions at Trump National Northern Virginia.
Most of the field had to start at 6:45 a.m. to finish the third round as rain delayed play on Friday and darkness halted play.
Singh started the day two behind but his 67 earned him the top spot. Langer was a little off with his iron game too often and shot 70. Singh applied pressure with four front nine birdies then continued with three more on the back but a couple of bogeys allowed Langer to stay close.
If either of those two falter over the final 18, Billy Andrade put himself in position to make a run. Andrade’s 69 got him to 12-under.
The only other player in double figures under par was Bob Estes. He tied Singh and Joey Sindelar for the day’s best round with 67.
Langer is trying to win his ninth senior major. A win would surpass Jack Nicklaus’ eight.
