The first five events of the fall series on the PGA Tour have yielded five first-time winners.
Derek Fathauer hopes to make it six on Sunday at the OHL Classic in Mayakoba.
Fathauer shot 66 on Saturday and he’s leading the field at 16-under par, a shot in front of veteran Jason Bohn, who has had a remarkable fall season himself.
Fathauer got his tour card back after a great finish on the Web.com Tour. He has not made a bogey the last two rounds at El Cameleon Golf Club.
The former Louisville star and the rest of the field played through rainy conditions early but it didn’t prevent them from scoring. Bohn shot 65, a nice round following his 63 on Friday.
Harold Varner III, who tied the course record on Friday with a 62, shot 68 and he’s one of four players who will start the final round three shots back at 13-under. First round leader Justin Leonard, Russell Knox and Graeme McDowell are there with him.
If it wasn’t for the first hole, McDowell would probably be leading by three shots. He has taken a beating on the opening hole with a pair of double-bogeys and a bogey — five over on that par four.
