You’d figure the odds of Brandt Snedeker shooting 61 on Friday at the Wyndham Championship were pretty slim when he was looking over a 52-foot birdie putt on his final hole, the par four ninth.
Snedeker arrived at the day’s end of his round at eight-under par, going nuts on the back nine, his first, with five birdies, including three straight starting at 14.
There was more of the same on the front. He birdied two, five and eight but looking at that long putt, you’d surely pencil him in for 62. But he hit the putt with plenty of force and it found its way to the bottom of the cup for a course record-tying 61 that put him at nine-under for 36 holes after his opening 70.
On a day that was more difficult than Thursday, Snedeker was sensational. They played the ball down and the wind was up. “It was just one of those days where I wasn’t hitting it perfect but I left myself a lot of uphill birdie putts. I rolled it fantastic, the greens were perfect.
“I was aggressive the last few holes,” Snedeker added. “I missed quite a few (putts) yesterday. I made up for it today.”
Snedeker’s record-tying round left him just two shots behind early clubhouse leader Tom Hoge. Hoge shot 67 to get to 11-under after 36. Davis Love III was a shot back of him at 10-under, adding a 66 to his opening 64.
