South Korea’s golf bragging rights continued again this past week.
First, their team won the UL Crown two weeks ago.
On Sunday, it was 27th-ranked Ingee Chun pulling a bit of a stunner at the Hana Bank.
Chun started the final round at the SKY62 Resort in South Korea three shots behind overnight leader Charley Hull and maybe Hull was more concerned with the likes of world’s No. 1 Sung Hyun Park and No. 2 Ariya Jutanugarn in pursuit over the final 18.
But it’s a good thing in golf when you shoot 66-66 over the weekend and that’s exactly what Chun did as she posted 16-under for the victory.
The win also got her off a precarious victory number.
“Before this week, I won 13 times as a professional,” said Chun, who clinched the third LPGA win of her career. “I am glad that I am done with the No. 13. I really hate that number.”
Chun also talked about how she’d been bullied and abused in the cyber-world. Seems that they take this women’s golf thing way too serious in South Korea.
Chun talked about the tough time she had reacting to negative comments about her swing that were floating around on the internet and rumors that spread about her every move. “I was really frustrated with myself for responding or reacting to those comments on line, and so I think that there was a factor there that pushed me down, and I didn’t want to get back up again. I was kind of scared because I didn’t know how I would act in front of people again, but then I didn’t want to act like somebody else. I always wanted to be true to myself and I wanted to be a genuine person,” Chun said after her win.
She can take solace with the three shot win over Hull and a four-shot margin over No. 1 Park, No. 2 Jutanugarn and No. 7 Minjee Lee.
Danielle Kang was the only American in sight of the leader, she finished in that group tied for third at 12-under par.
The LPGA Tour stays in Asia for what seems like the next month or so.
They play this week in Shanghai, the following week in Taiwan or Taipei, whichever you prefer, then Japan, then in China the week of Nov. 7.
