After a spectacular round, anything under par is a good followup effort on the PGA Tour.
Brendan Steele didn’t come close to the 63 he shot on Thursday but his 70 on Friday gave him a two-shot lead going into the weekend at the Frys.com Open.
It’s going to be a competitive weekend at the Silverado Country Club, Steele has some big names pursuing him.
One of them is Justin Rose, who has found more length off the tee thanks to a stronger workout routine and a shaft change in his driver. Rose has rounds of 67-68 in the books and he’s three back of Steele.
Steele shot 70 on his second trip around Silverado and that got him to 11-under par. He’s the only player to reach double figures under par after 36 holes.
There are four players in at nine-under including Jhonattan Vegas (65-71), Will Wilcox (68-67), Graham DeLaet (67-68) and rookie Harold Varner III (65-70).
Rory McIlroy, the highest-ranked player in the field, struggled a bit on Friday and could only manage a one-under par 71 that left him in a group of 10 players at five-under.
Scoring was low but not as low as Thursday. The 36-hole cut came at two-under par.
