Things started poorly Thursday for Henrik Stenson at Bethpage Black.
He started on the back nine and bogeyed his opening hole then at the par four 11th, he tangled with a fairway bunker and five shots later, walked off the hole with a triple-bogey seven. He turned in 39.
On the front, he tried his best to fight back but something wasn’t right.
By the end of the day he posted 74 then withdrew from the tournament.
It revolved around pain in his right knee and he wasn’t taking any chances.
The reigning Open champion and Silver Medalist at the Rio Olympics, had this to say after his round:
“My right knee, which required surgery in December (2015), has flared up again..”
He said he will get an MRI as soon as possible to determine when he can play again.
