Henrik Stenson hasn’t won anything since the 2016 Open Championship.
That victory drought came to an exciting end Sunday at the Wyndham Championship.
Stenson came up with a birdie barrage over his final four holes to edge 24-year-old Ollie Schneiderjans.
“It was anyone’s game today,” Stenson pointed out after he made a great up-and-down for par at the 18th to finish 22-under par. “He (Schneiderjans) pushed me all the way to the end. I thought I had a two-shot lead but when I came around the corner to the 18th tee, I saw Ollie birdied 18.”
Schneiderjans, the only player who doesn’t wear a cap, hat or visor, sank an incredible downhill breaking putt at the 17th for birdie to get to 20-under then he nearly holed his approach into the 18th. It rolled over the edge of the hole and stopped just over a foot away for a tap-in birdie.
Stenson missed the fairway at 18 and his second ended up over the green. He putted from the fringe and left himself an uphill three-footer for the win. He had to wait as playing partner Kevin Na missed a par putt from inside three feet. Na was slow the entire back nine and the lead group was put on the clock twice for bad times.
In the end, it didn’t bother Stenson. “It’s just nice to get a win again,” he said.
There was a tournament within the tournament. It was the last chance for players to make the top 125 and earn a spot in the FedEx playoffs that start on Thursday in New York.
J.J. Henry took “anchor man” honors at No. 125 thanks to a tie for 16th at 11-under par. Vaughn Taylor finished six-under and was No. 124 while Harold Varner III played his way in as well. Varner came in at No. 138 but a tie for 10th jumped him to No. 123.
