It took Steve Stricker exactly two rounds of golf to make himself at home on the Champions Tour.
Stricker took center stage Saturday at the Tucson Conquistador Classic with a 10-under par round of 63 and vaulted himself into the 36-hole lead. After opening with 67 on Friday, Stricker is an impressive 16-under through 36 holes at Tucson National.
Stricker, making his debut on the over-50 set, will go into the final round with a three-shot advantage over Tom Lehman and a five-shot advantage over Kevin Sutherland and Fred Couples.
“Just keep doing what I’m doing,” said Stricker when he spoke about his approach to the final 18. Stricker hit 17 of 18 greens and had just 26 puts to blow past the rest of the field. “I put a lot of pressure on myself to play well out here so I’ll put my head down and keep going.”
Stricker hasn’t made a bogey in 36 holes. His Saturday round included eight birdies and an eagle.
