Scoring is totally out of hand at the 40th Senior U.S. Open.
What’s transpiring at Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course looks nothing like any sort of USGA event, except maybe a juniors competition.
Steve Stricker’s scoring rampage continued on Friday. He followed up his 62 with a 64 and he’s 14-under par, a new Senior Open record, of course. He’s not the only one tearing it up in what is turning out to be the easiest of the 40 old-guy Opens. Jerry Kelly is 12-under after a pair of 64s and defending champion David Toms isn’t far back. Toms opened with 62, like Stricker, then shot 67 Friday.
In all, it took one-over to make the cut and one-over should typically be near the lead in any kind of U.S. Open, regular, senior or women’s.
Not this time.
This one looks like some Champions Tour grocery store classic.
Sad.
Shame on the USGA.
