The winds came up and so did the scoring Friday at the RSM Classic at Sea Island.
But the tougher conditions didn’t phase Kevin Chappell. Chappell fashioned a five-under par 65 at the Seaside course and grabbed the halfway lead.
Chappell, who is looking for his first PGA Tour win, is 11-under par through 36 holes and a shot in front of first round leader Kevin Kisner and Freddie Jacobson.
Kyle Stanley is two back at nine-under par.
Graeme McDowell carried his momentum from his victory last week and is in the hunt again. The former U.S. Open champion seven-under.
The breezy conditions put a halt to Thursday’s birdie barrage. Chappell’s 65 was five-shots lower than the day’s average score.
It’s been a while since Chappell has been in solid contention. He had only two top 10s last season.
The 36-hole cut came at two-under par and 87 players made it to the weekend.
