“Obviously it was a great round of golf.”
So said Sergio Garcia Thursday at the Byron Nelson, not long after he blistered the front nine, his final nine of the day, in 29 strokes, going birdie-eagle-birdie-par to finish his first round.
“I played pretty solid,” said Garcia, who is back at the Nelson for the first time since 2011.
Garcia came in early, late in the day after a two-hour rain delay, Danny Lee tied Garcia for the lead with his own 63 along with Johnson Wagner.
Jordan Spieth proved there’s no place like home as he shot his best round in a long time — a six-under par 64. Spieth had some troubles off the tee but he still hit eight greens on the front nine, turned three-under and picked up three more birdies coming home. He wasn’t the only big name at six-under. Dustin Johnson got off to a good start as well with five birdies an eagle offset by a single bogey.
Scoring for the first round was low as the field played lift-clean-and-place with wet conditions. Eighty-six players, more than half the field were under par when played was called due to darkness. The groups that didn’t finish will be back early Friday morning.
