What Steve Alkar has accomplished over the past few months on the Champions Tour is simply mind-boggling and he added to his amazing story on Sunday with a win at the Timber Tech Championship in Boca Raton.
Alkar, an Australian, had a few cups of coffee on the PGA Tour, never did much and spent most of his time on the Australasian and European Tours then came over and played in Korn Ferry events.
The Aussie turned 50 on July 28 and two weeks later going into the Boeing field as a qualifier and finished seventh. After that he took third in the Ally. He was playing his way to status on a tour that is often considered a closed shop.
Friday’s first round at Broken Sound was washed out and they played 36 on Saturday. Alker shot 68-63 and was a shot back of the leaders, Jim Furyk and Tim Petrovic at 14-under heading into Sunday’s finale.
Alkar found himself locked in a battle with Furyk, who was second in the Schwab Cup points behind Berhard Langer. Alkar holed an 18-footer on the 15th hole to take the lead and he polished Furyk and Miguel Angel Jimenez off with a closing birdie for 68 and a 17-under par total of 199. He won $305,000 and pushed his earnings for just a few months to $896,207 and he racked that up in just nine events.
The Aussie jumped from 46th in the Schwab standings to 22nd and earned a spot in the Charles Schwab Cup championship.
Langer kept a slim lead (71,000 points) over Fuyrk heading into this week’s finale at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
