The PGA Tour visits one of its many properties this week with that tax-shelter known as the TPC San Antonio serving as the venue for the Valero Texas Open.
Seems all the famous lads are still recuperating from their exhaustive efforts at the 82nd Masters two weeks ago.
No doubt Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler are still recuperating from their reception refreshment intake at pal Smylie Kaufman’s wedding last weekend in Birmingham, Al.
Note none of the aforementioned are in San Antonio this week.
Your only household name in attendance is that of one Sergio Garcia, who now has firm Texas roots thanks to wife Angela.
Garcia, ranked 10th in the world, hasn’t played in San Antonio in what seems like forever, so thank-you Angela.
Sure Matt Kuchar’s there. Kuchar feasts on weaker fields and has become golf’s equivalent of an ATM machine without actually winning many events. Kuch is No. 21.
Pat Perez has been showing his tour life begins at 30. He’s up to 22 in the OWGR and is playing better than he did in his younger years.
Which brings us to defending champion Kevin Chappell. Chappell sank a birdie putt at the 72nd hole last year to edge Brooks Koepka. No worries about Koepka contending again, he’s still on the mend with the bad wrist.
Hopefully San Antonio will at least get a break from the weatherman. Saturday’s pretty iffy so at least they’ll be able to trim the field before the weather turns uncertain.
