The Wednesday Par Three contest at the Masters has evolved into a picnic atmosphere, a family outing where the cute little kids miss putts for their dads to remove that all-encompassing jinx.
No winner of the Par Three contest has ever gone on to win the actual tournament.
Jimmy Walker didn’t seem to care. He had an ace and seven birdies in nine holes on his way to setting a scoring record for the contest — eight-under par. He probably should have saved some of those birdies for Thursday when he’ll need them.
Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were without Arnold Palmer so they pulled 66-year-old Tom Watson into the group.
Defending champion Jordan Spieth joined with Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas. They looked like a boy-band out there. The moment of the afternoon came when Fowler made a hole-in-one on the fourth and Thomas then holed one on top of it. Spieth lost the hole with birdie.
It was that kind of afternoon.
Rory McIlroy sat it out, was probably already back at his place resting. No big deal. All he missed was another horse-and-pony show.
It’s an afternoon for the kids, and that’s just fine.
