Tiger Woods got his kicks on Route 66 Thursday.
Actually, he shot 66, finally putting up a good number on a course that will yield some very low numbers over the next three days at the Greenbrier Classic.
Woods recovered from his only bad hole of the first round at the Old White Course, finishing with three straight birdies after making double-bogey at the par fourth sixth, his 15th hole of the day.
That’s the good news. The bad news is he was still four shots behind early leader Scott Langley who posted eight birdies on his way to an opening 62. Jonathan Byrd was right behind him with a 63 while Brian Davis and Ryo Ishikawa had 64s in the morning wave.
It still marked progress for Woods, albeit on a relatively friendly golf course that is prone to yield birdies.
Baby steps for Woods, ranked 222nd in the world.
